Arctic-Centre–FINLAND

The Science Centre located in Arktikum house maintains and develops the permanent and temporary exhibitions of the Arctic Centre, which also include an information service department and an international research department. It belongs to the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland. The exhibitions present in a friendly and interactive atmosphere the environment and life of the peoples of the Arctic as well as the issues related to the ongoing changes throughout the circumpolar regions. The Science Centre also takes part in organising different events like public lectures, film festival, school workshops and international and national conferences. Its main mission consists on carrying science communication activities related to the Arctic. Informing and popularising science are at the core of the science centre’s mission. Around 60% of the 80 000 in average of the visitors coming to Arktikum in the latest years came from outside Finland.

Mr. Nicolas Gunslay (Executive Chief Producer)
Currently leading the science exhibition centre of the University of Lapland, responsible for the development of the permanent exhibitions as well as projects related to science communications and information on Arctic issues towards wide audiences. He has a master degree and post-graduate diploma in social anthropology, University of Strasbourg, France and has also worked for the Arctic Centre as a scientist from 1997 to 2002, before taking the lead of the science centre from 2003 and ongoing.

Mr Ari Laakso (Science Communicator)
Arctic Centre’s science communicator Ari Laakso has a master degree in social sciences (sociology and Arctic studies) and is currently finishing his PhD in the same field. His main task as a science communicator is to communicate research results to the general public and develop new content for the science centre exhibition. He is also arranging different forms of outreaches in the form of public events and workshops.
